Colorlight VX20 4K LED Video Processor Overview

The Colorlight VX20 combines a digital video processor, video switching and LED display control in one unit. It is designed for rental stages, live productions, exhibitions and fine-pitch LED walls that need several video sources and a preview workflow. Operators can prepare the next composition in PVW (preview) while monitoring the current PGM (program) output.

This Colorlight video processor provides 20 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 10G fiber ports. Choose Video Processor, Bypass or Fiber Optic Transceiver mode to match the signal path. For project planning, check the screen pixel count, receiving cards, source formats and redundancy requirements together.

VX20 Specifications and Connection Limits

Colorlight VX20 technical specifications
ParameterSpecification and limits
Video inputs2 × HDMI 2.0, 2 × DP 1.2, 2 × 12G-SDI and 4 × HDMI 1.4 connectors. HDMI and SDI loop outputs are provided.
4K input limitsHDMI 2.0, DP 1.2 and 12G-SDI: up to 4096 × 2160 at 60Hz. HDMI 1.4: up to 4096 × 2160 at 30Hz or 4096 × 1080 at 60Hz.
HDMI 1.4 sharingThe specification permits two HDMI 1.4 inputs or four HDMI 1.3 inputs simultaneously.
LED outputs20 × Gigabit Ethernet; 4 × 10G fiber. FIBER 1/2 are primary; FIBER 3/4 provide backup or copying.
Load capacityUp to 13.1 million pixels at 8-bit/60Hz; up to 9.8 million pixels at 10-bit/60Hz, according to Specification V1.20.
Maximum canvas dimensionsWidth up to 16,384 pixels or height up to 8,192 pixels, within the applicable total pixel capacity. These are separate limits.
Color processing8/10/12-bit input and 8/10-bit output. HDMI 1.4 is limited to 8-bit and does not support HDR.
Monitoring output1 × HDMI 2.0 output for a monitor showing inputs, presets or PVW/PGM views.
Fiber modulesSFP+ optical modules are optional. Transmission distance depends on the selected module.

Capacity planning: Higher frame rates and 10-bit output reduce the available pixel load. Do not combine the maximum width, maximum height and maximum frame rate into one assumed operating specification. Confirm the exact output configuration before ordering.

Preview, Switch and Control Your LED Wall

Three 4K layers and PVW/PGM switching

Create layouts with up to three 4K images, scale sources to the required size and preview a composition before switching it to the live screen. The 4K Multiviewer helps the operator monitor sources and the program output during a show.

Choose the working mode for the job

  • Video Processor: processes multiple sources for the LED display. Colorlight specifies a one-frame device delay in this mode.
  • Bypass: sends one selected video input to the receiving cards, with a specified zero-frame device delay. End-to-end system latency still depends on the source and display chain.
  • Fiber Optic Transceiver: uses FIBER 1/2 as inputs and the Ethernet ports for the downstream LED system.

Control and redundancy

The web interface supports Windows, macOS and Linux for screen mapping and parameter management. Input hot backup and Ethernet/fiber redundancy provide options for a resilient signal path. Configure and check the intended backup route before a live event.

Check Compatibility Before Ordering

  1. Count the pixels: multiply the full screen width by its height, then check both the total load and how cabinets are assigned to each output.
  2. Match the source: record resolution, frame rate, bit depth and connector type. Use a suitable HDMI 2.0, DP 1.2 or 12G-SDI input for 4K at 60Hz.
  3. Plan the receiving system: provide your receiving-card model, cabinet resolution and mapping. Confirm compatibility with the Colorlight control system before connecting existing cabinets.
  4. Plan fiber routing: FIBER 1/2 correspond to Ethernet groups 1–10 and 11–20. Fiber takes priority when used with the corresponding Ethernet outputs; the ports are not additional independent capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every VX20 HDMI input support 4K at 60Hz?

No. HDMI 2.0 supports up to 4096 × 2160 at 60Hz. The HDMI 1.4 inputs support that resolution at 30Hz and have shared-input restrictions. Match each source to the correct connector.

Can the VX20 load 13.1 million pixels at every setting?

No. The V1.20 specification lists that maximum at 8-bit/60Hz. At 10-bit/60Hz it lists 9.8 million pixels. Higher frame rates require a separate capacity check.

Are all four fiber ports independent screen outputs?

No. FIBER 1/2 carry the primary groups; FIBER 3/4 back up or copy those groups. Optical modules are optional, so confirm the required module type and quantity with your order.

Conclusion

The Colorlight VX20 suits LED wall projects that need 4K source processing, preview/program switching and flexible Ethernet or fiber transport. Select it against the actual screen load and signal format, then confirm receiving-card compatibility and the complete connection plan.
